Morocco’s High Atlas - A Wildlife Guide
One of the things we get asked a lot, by people thinking about joining a trek to Mounth Toubkal, is what it’s like walking in a desert.
The reality is that, while North Africa is undeniably a hot and dry place - it’s not a desert. It’s actually a surprisngly biodiverse place, and Toubkal National Park, where Mount Toubkal is unsurprisingly situated, is a prime example.
So, pick up your binoculars, grab your notepad, and follow us on a short guide through some of the amazing wildlife you should look out for, as we take you on your High Atlas walk.
Porcupines
I know, right? Not in a million years did you think that would be first. But, yes, Crested Porcupines live in various parts of Africa, and Morocco is one of them. They are nocturnal though, so we might see one on the early morning walk to summit Mount Toubkal at sunrise, but otherwise don’t hold your breath.
Boar
Much like a lot of southern Europe nowadays boar are a staple of North Africa, except they were never on the brink of extinction. Largely because the majority muslim populatin don’t eat pork. But, also because this is where they originated. If you see a family of boar, with a dozen boarlets, it’ll make your day.
Gazelle
Another animal you might immediately associate with the plains of the Serengeti, not Morocco. But, Cuvier’s Gazelle are found across North West Africa, and it’s a treat to spot these little creatures in Toubkal National Park. Unfortunately they’ve been hunted, and outcompeted for habitat, but are still around.
Atlas Mountain Viper
As the name suggests, this is a venemous little snake, that lives exclusively in the High Atlas. Unfortunately, there aren’t many of these handsome creatures left, and they’re pretty small, so it’s tricky to spot one, unless you’re really looking. Keep your eye out on very hot days, for flat rocks and some energy recharging happening.
Golden Eagle
Yep, again, I bet you can’t believe it. Golden Eagles actually inhabit a broad geographic range around the Mediterranean. From Greece and Turkey, to the Iberian peninsula, across the strait to North Africa. Anywhere there are decent mid-level mountains to get lift, and look for prey. Remember to look up while you’re walking.
So, there you go. Of course, there are dozens of other birds, lizards, rodents and more to look out for. Toubkal National Park is a rich place, and we take you right through it, ensuring we respect the hard work done to preserve it, and always leaving less than we came with.
Oh yes, the macaque. There are Barbary Macaques. Don’t feed them. And don’t give money if you see any performing.
