Where on earth is Mount Toubkal?

mount toubkal morocco

It’s a great question, and one we’ve been asked a lot, since setting up Epic Escapes and running the High Atlas Walk.

If you ask anyone to name a mountain, they will almost certainly rattle off a few classics - Everest, Kilimanjaro, Fuji - then trail off into silence. Obviously your more geographically-minded, or adventure-seeking friends, will show off and give you a bunch more - Lhotse, Naw Shakh or Batura Sar maybe. But, Mount Toubkal?

Toubkal, know locally as Jbel Toubkal is in the High Atlas mountain range in Morocco, and the largest of that part of the wider Atlas range in North Africa. At a little over 4100m it’s not the most imposing, and perhaps consequently well-known place.

Africa, whilst it’s known for many amazing natural and geological wonders, isn’t known for it's mountains - aside from Kilimanjaro. There are many ranges though and, for us, Mount Toubkal is a perfect choice for an Epic Escape.

Why? Because for people in the UK and Europe, it’s a pretty easy and short (also cheap) flight. A couple of hours and you’ll be in Marrakech, the beginning of our trip.

Then it’s up and out of the hustle and bustle of the souks, and into the low ranges, before ultimately heading out in the dark small hours of the morning, and summitting Toubkal at sunrise. The view across the incredile clouds of the morning, and the vastness of the Sahara, is breath-taking.

So, not been up a mountain before? Think you can manage some gentle, but consistent walking? Want to experience the wonders of north Africa, and get the best selfie you’ve ever taken? Check out our Morocco page right here.
