Morocco - High Atlas Trek
Enjoy an amazing Moroccan adventure that packs in mountains, waterfalls, Berber villages and the colourful souks of Marrakech!
In just 6 days you’ll pack in some serious walking as you take on North Africa’s highest peak - Mount Toubkal - and summit at 4,167 metres [13,761 feet] in time for dawn over the endless Sahara desert.
You don’t need mountaineering experience, or equipment to take this trip on, which is fully guided, and catered. All you need is strap your boots on, enjoy the views, and keep walking as we treat you to the hospitality of the Berbers.

Example Itinerary with included meals - (B/L/D)
DAY 1
Fly/Arrive at Marrakech. Transfer to your traditional riad hotel included. Evening free to explore the city, with its colourful souks, and vibrant local cuisine. Attend a briefing later at our hotel, where you’ll meet the team, and learn all you need to know for the next few days.
DAY 2 - 4 hours walking - Medium Effort (B/L/D)
The call to prayer awakes you, and after breakfast you’ll board our coach for the short drive, 40 miles south into the Atlas mountains. En route you’ll see the Berber villages and people, as we snake up to the village of Imlil, where you begin your walk up through walnut groves and orchards, toward your first mountain pass. The steep climb is rewarded by locals, who squeeze fresh juice for you at the top of a long climb. Then it’s a short stroll to the picnic lunch prepared in the sunshine.
In the afternoon you'll finish the day by making it to your night at Azib Tamsoult. You’ll eat under the stars, or in your snug bell tent with rug carpets, before a night under canvas, in the cosy refuge.
DAY 3 - 6 hours walking - Higher Effort (B/L/D)
Once you’ve eaten breakfast you begin a walk up the hidden valley of the Cascades d’Irhoulidene - waterfalls over 20 metres high, and which flank the way upwards. As you climb you'll zig-zag to over a high pass of 3400 metres, and begin to see spectacular views of Mount Toubkal itself, streaked in snow half the year. In the afternoon, you'll descend to the mountain refuge below. Here you’ll be welcomed with hot drinks, a hearty lunch, and well earned rest.
Another Moroccan feast awaits you for dinner, and your second night. You'll be briefed on tomorrow's bid for the summit, before you get some social time, sip sweet mint tea, and then to bed.
DAY 4 - Summit Day - Higher Effort (B/L/D)
Today’s the big day! You're up in the dark, with head torches on, tackling the route to the summit of North Africa. Within an hour or two it’s light though, and you pick your way upwards heading to 4167 metres and the summit of Mount Toubkal. You’ll experience the exhilaration of success, and watch the sun rise. With luck you can stare across the endless lands of the Sahara to the east, and take the selfie of a lifetime.
Following this you return to the refuge in the valley, and are treated to lunch, before following the cascading river down a sunlit mountain valley to the ancient village of Aroumd. Here a comfy bed, a shower and another well earned meal await you. You'll watch the sun set after an unbelievable day, from the roof terrace with views all the way back to the summit. Well done.
DAY 5 - Travel, Shop, Relax, Celebrate (B/D)
A short walk to Imlil awaits you this morning, as you return to the coach through olive and citrus groves, hugging the streams. Once on board you'll head back to Marrakech, where you have time to relax by the pool, trawl the souks for some great shopping, or see the city’s sights. But don’t miss the evening meal, looking out over the throbbing heart of Marrakesh, Jemaa El-Fnaa - UNESCO world heritage square in the old town and raise a glass to your success.
DAY 6 - Travel (B)
Your trip ends with the transfer bus to the airport, and you'll be safely set off home, and onto fresh adventures!

FAQs
-
Generally we have 8-12 people on a trip, sometimes more and sometimes less.
Some people come with a friend or partner, but many come alone and make the experience of meeting new people part of their trip.
-
We are committed to personal experiences, that are an extension of our own passion for the places and nature of our trips. So, we create trekking tours, with local partners, that we go on and are both responsible for and part of.
When you book with us, you are literally booking with the people who will be meeting you at the airport, transferring your bags, and guiding you on the trek from start to finish.
Big travel companies have much bigger design, marketing and sales budgets than we will ever have. But, we started Epic Escapes because we want to do less, better. A limited number of trips, with a limited number of people, to a few special places.
-
Flights are not included in your booking price.
People want to come on an epic escape from different cities, countries and time zones. So, the cost and timing of your flight is unique to you, and cannot be specified so far in advance.
By allowing you to book your own flights we can keep the overall costs to a minimum for you, and allow you maximum flexibility.
We can help to select the right flights though, one of us will be travelling - so you can always decide to hop on the same one as us.
-
This depends entirely on a combination of the destination, and your passport.
For our current planned trips, a UK passport grants visa-free travel to Morocco, Peru and Malaysia.
Nepal offers a visa-on-arrival, which means you don’t need to pre-arrange anything, and can get your visa in the airport.
Before you book your escape with us we will let you know all of the requirements and costs, and help with any arrangements well ahead of time.
-
We include almost all of your meals and accommodation as part of your booking price. You'll usually want a little cash for tips, and souvenirs only.
In the schedule of activities for your trip, we break down each day, and which meals are included, and what accommodation is arranged.
Where a meal - such as lunch on some days - isn't provided, we will be sure to take you to excellent quality and value locations, where shopping and browsing for local foods is a pleasure.
Before you book your trip, we will ensure you are 100% clear on any extra costs, and the best way (cash, card etc) to manage your money.
-
Currently you pay us a deposit - usually £250-350 - which allows us to secure the in-country guides, accommodation, taxes etc. This is why it’s non-refundable.
You pay us using either a payment card, or bank transfer. We can supply a booking confirmation beforehand, with our address and company number.
We then arrange for the remainder of your balance to be paid in 3 payments, which we’ll send you reminders for. You can, of course, pay all in one go, but you can spread the cost, at 0% interest.
-
Our trips have different levels of fitness required although, in general, if you are regularly walking, and can take on hours of consistent walking, then you’ll be ok.
Spending time in the Lakes, Brecons or Peaks is good training for any of our walks. There are hours of walking every day, but this is a holiday, not a route marchWe stop and take in the sights, get refreshments, and pace to the whole group.
However, this is a trek, not an afternoon walk. Be ready to strap on decent, worn-in boots, but a bag on your back, and put one foot in front of the other for most of each day of your epic escape.
-
There’s a lot of nervousness about high altitude, but it’s really just a case of acclimatising. In the Andes you are very high above see level, and the air is literally thinner.
However, you’ll arrive a day before any walking, and a good night’s sleep and some gentle exploring, is plenty to get you used to it.
We are experts at taking you to altitude and managing any symptoms you may have, plus we are fully trained first aiders and responders.
