The Best Way to Prepare for the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu
The Salkantay Trail presents a stunning and challenging walk through the Peruvian Andes. A trip that will give you landscape, nature and views to take your breath away. Joining our fantastic trip will be the epic escape of your life.
To make the most of this adventure, proper preparation is essential.
Physical Training
The trail reaches altitudes over 15,000 feet (4,600 meters), making it physically demanding. Begin training at least two to three months prior. Focus on cardiovascular exercises like running, hiking, or cycling to build endurance. Incorporate strength training, particularly targeting your legs, core, and back, as you'll be carrying a pack on sometimes uneven terrain.
Altitude Acclimatization
Effects of altitude is a common issue on the Salkantay Trail. You’ll arrive in Cusco, which sits at 11,000 feet (3,300 meters), a few days early to acclimate, and we recommend you drink plenty of water and consider using altitude sickness medication, such as acetazolamide, if you're prone to symptoms.
Gear and Clothing
Invest in a comfortable pair of hiking boots that you've broken in. Pack moisture-wicking clothing, a rain jacket, thermal layers, and a hat for varying weather conditions. A good quality backpack and trekking poles are recommended for support and balance.
Hydration and Nutrition
Carry a hydration system, like a Camelbak or other water pack, to ensure you're drinking enough. Pack snacks rich in protein and complex carbohydrates for energy.
By preparing your body, acclimating to the altitude, and bringing the right gear, you’ll be ready to tackle the breathtaking Salkantay Trail to the marvel that is Machu Picchu.
